Ingredients

  • Box of chocolate cake mix – We used Devil’s food cake mix, but you can use any chocolate cake mix you like.
  • Large eggs – Adds richness and helps to bind the dough for that perfect cookie texture.
  • Melted butter – Gives the cookies a rich, buttery flavor and a soft, chewy texture.
  • Vanilla extract – Enhances the chocolate flavor and adds a hint of sweetness.
  • Mini chocolate chips – We used semi-sweet, but you can use milk, dark, or white chocolate chips for different flavor profiles.
  • Mini M&M candies – Adds fun colors and just a little bit of crunch.

How to Make Easy Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies

Step One: Mix the Ingredients

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry cake mix, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir ingredients until well combined and a thick dough forms.
  • Gently fold in the mini chocolate chips and M&M’s candies until evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Step Three: Chill the Dough

  • Cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes, or overnight. Chilling the dough will enhance flavor and texture.

Step Four: Bake and Cool

  • Once the cookie batter has chilled, using a medium-size cookie scoop, scoop out portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake the cookie dough balls, in your preheated oven, for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the tops of the cookies have a slight crust.
  • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Tip: Do not overbake. The cookies may look doughy in the center but will firm up as they cool. This is what makes them stay soft.

Storing These Cookies

  • Fridge: Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. There’s no need to refrigerate them.
  • Freezer: You can freeze them too. Place the cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They’ll keep well for up to 3 months. Let them thaw at room temperature or warm them up in the microwave for a few seconds.

Variations and Add-ins

  • M&Ms – We used regular mini M&Ms, but you can swap them out for peanut, caramel, or crispy M&Ms for a different texture and flavor. You can use other colors too, red and green M&Ms for the holiday season or red and pink for Valentine’s Day, etc.
  • Chocolate chips – We used regular semi-sweet chocolate chips, but you can use white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or peanut butter chips for a fun twist.
  • Nuts – Add a little crunch with chopped walnuts, pecans, or almonds. They pair perfectly with the rich chocolate flavors.
  • Sprinkles – Mix in some colorful sprinkles for birthdays or other celebrations.
  • Gooey caramel bits – Fold some small caramel pieces into the dough. They will melt as the cookies bake and give you little gooey pockets.
  • Sea salt – Sprinkle a little sea salt on top of the cookies before baking. It adds a delicious sweet and salty flavor combo.
  • Coconut flakes – Mix in some sweetened shredded coconut for a tropical twist.
  • Toffee bits – Add some toffee bits for extra sweetness and crunch.

Top Tips for Making M&M Cookies

  • This dough is fairly sticky, so make sure you always use a prepared cookie sheet because they tend to stick otherwise.
  • Make sure not to overbake the cookies; they should stay soft and chewy.
  • Stir in the mini M&M’s and chocolate chips by hand instead of using a mixer to avoid crushing the candies.
  • Using a medium-sized cookie scoop helps you create evenly-sized cookies, but you can make them as big or small as you prefer.

Cake Mix Cookie FAQ’s

Can I use regular-size M&M’s and chocolate chips?

Yes, but use about ¼ or ⅓ cup of each instead of ½ cup. If there are too many the cookies won’t be able to spread properly.

Can I use other flavors of cake mix?

Of course! The Devil’s Food Cake mix gives the cookies a rich, chocolatey flavor, but feel free to use any kind you want. If you want chocolate cookies but only have white or yellow cake mix, you can add 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder. This will give your cake the chocolate flavor you’re looking for. You’ll also want to add another tablespoon of melted butter.

Why are my cookies crumbling?

These cookies have a soft texture and when warm, they are more delicate than some other chewy cookies. It’s best to let them cool completely on a wire rack before moving them around too much.
